National acknowledgement for Pader-project

9 October 2024

Application for the European Heritage Label will be submitted to the European Commission for the nomination year 2025

“I am enthusiastic, grateful and very touched for our great engagement to have received this national acknowledgement at the Conference of Ministers of Culture in Berlin.” With these words mayor Michael Dreier reacts to news of Paderborn’s application for the European Heritage Label being submitted to Brussels by the Federal Republic of Germany. It shows the high level of appreciation of the project “City.People.River. – The Pader for Europe”. In the spring of 2025, it will be decided in Brussels whether the application of the city of Paderborn, with its history and message of the unique urban river landscape of the Pader, will successfully obtain the European Heritage Label.

After an extensive preparation of the application as well as the submission to and forwarding by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the state of North-Rhine-Westphalia in October of 2023 it is now certain that Paderborn’s application is one important step closer to the European Heritage Label.

“I see the intensive work of engaged actors from the city administration, the university and the urban society for more than two years being rewarded and I’m delighted we mastered this important step together. In the following months we will carry on working on the project as a team and, for example, realize the therein included learning sites continuously”, empathizes Claudia Warnecke, executive director of urban development departments and project management at the city administration, who leads the project on behalf of the City of Paderborn.

The application for the European Heritage Label was created in scientific and partnership-based cooperation with the University of Paderborn and the association “Freunde der Pader” (Friends of the Pader).

Aside from guaranteeing scientific contents this cooperation offers the possibility of bringing research topics into society.
