Climate walk in Paderborn

27 May 2025:

The effects of climate change can also be felt in the city of Paderborn: the past few months have been characterized by little precipitation, warm temperatures and a high number of hours of sunshine. According to the German Weather Service, March in particular was characterized by extreme dryness with a monthly precipitation total of only 10 l/m², while an unusually high number of sunshine hours, 248 hours, were measured in April. Heat and drought are a challenge for the city and its inhabitants. But how can cities and their inhabitants prepare for these consequences? What options are there to protect against heat?

These and other questions will be the focus of the climate walk on Wednesday, June 4. The NRW Consumer Advice Center and the City of Paderborn's Office for Environmental Protection and Green Spaces are jointly inviting all interested parties to explore successful examples of climate adaptation measures in the city centre. The walk will be accompanied by a Paderborn doctor who will provide information on the effects of heat on the human body. The walk starts at 5 p.m. at the town hall, covers a distance of around one and a half kilometers and is barrier-free. Participation is free of charge. Please register by Tuesday, June 3, at klima@paderborn.de.

The climate walk takes place in connection with the nationwide Heat Action Day on June 4, which aims to inform people about the health risks of heat and possible prevention measures with various campaigns and events throughout Germany.

Following the success of the last climate walk in September 2024, two more walks will also be offered this year. The climate walk on August 29 will focus on the topic of water, while another walk on the topic of greening will take place on September 16. Registration is already open at klima@paderborn.de.
