2 June 2025:
This year, the “Days of Gardens and Parks” will take place on the weekend of June 14 and 15. During the event organized by the LWL, private gardens and public parks in Westphalia-Lippe will open their doors and invite you to visit them. The city of Paderborn is also taking part this year and invites all interested parties to a guided tour through the western Paderquell area on Saturday, June 14. The offer is free of charge and starts at 2 p.m. at Abdinghof 11, in front of the town hall.
Speakers Stefan Buschmeier from the Office for Environmental Protection and Green Spaces and Joachim Ewers from the Cologne planning office Grow Landschaftsarchitektur will explain the planning and implementation of the restoration of the garden monument to all participants. On May 20, 2022, “Storm Emmelinde” damaged numerous houses in the city and devastated parks and green spaces. Around 95% of the historic trees in the listed Paderquell area were lost, which amounted to a total loss. This level of destruction in a garden monument as a result of climatic change processes is unparalleled in Germany.
A restoration concept commissioned last year is tackling this task and developing proposals for revitalizing the garden artwork. The main task is to restore the trees and shrubs in a way that is appropriate to the monument and also to take account of the challenges posed by climate change in the coming decades.
The first construction work is due to start in the summer. Stefan Buschmeier and Joachim Ewers will explain the concept in more detail during the tour and invite all interested parties to get a comprehensive picture of this special construction project.
Just in time for the Days of Gardens and Parks, the new interactive map has gone online on the LWL garden portal. Visitors can now search even more specifically for the diverse contributions in Westphalia-Lippe.
